How do you search the WhoIs database?

I am trying to figure out how to research the WhoIs database to see who how many domain names, and which ones, to which a person or entity is registered?

For example, I’m trying to figure out how many domain names are registered to John Doe. I’d like access to the WhoIs database so I can search for all sites that have the registrant John Doe and have a list returned to me.

I know I can enter a website, like www.OneMonthFree.com, into a domain registration firm like GoDaddy and use their WhoIs database to find out the registrant of a specific domain, but there are some 59 million .com sites and I really don’t have that much time. I want to reverse that process and research on name or address or phone number or other searchable field.

Naturally, I’d like to search for free, but pay sites are OK.

While the 2 sites below aren’t completely accurate, they give as much info as possible:

Looking to stop MySpaceProfiles.org from stealing and exploiting minor’s on their dating site LEGAL HELP?

Private profiles with personal information, pictures of minor age children, and such have been stolen from MySpace and copied to myspaceprofiles.org which is a "TEEN DATING SITE" according to an article I found through google a guy who calls himself Preeti is the author this is his email address preeti.1206@gmail.com. Under the Whois domain registration site it is showing the domain registered to UK, India and Beverly Hills CA. I tried to call the phone numbers to the CA. address and there all fax machine numbers. My niece who is 15 snuck a myspace profile she was not allowed BUT it happened. They phished her account and listed the profile with pictures and all on their dating siting site. We have sent over 200 emails followed their steps to remove the profile and we get no response whats so ever. This is happening to all ages. YES they should not be on MySpace I agree ok. BUT when you veiw their site it has ages 19 yrs to 80 yrs and 19 yrs and under tonnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnssssssssssssssss of children under the age of 18 THIS IS A DISGRACE. They are exploiting children under the age of 18 for dating all around the world, they are phishing accounts, stealing identities, using Copyrighted material such as trademarks logos pictures etc. Business name without the MySpace profile owner’s permission.

How do we get the profile taken off their website?

How do we STOP them from exploiting our kids?

What legal action can be taken?

I am forming and organizing a large group to go after MySpaceProfiles.org and want to pursue them legally is their any attorneys who would be interested in this cause? Since their company shares are up and growing as well I wonder why exploiting minors for dating worldwide

If you know of any attorney please give me a name?

and they charge for a membership as well here’s some info I have found along with I.P. addresses and such some I don’t understand but I m trying to track it all back to one company Please Help me do that if you can here’s the info I found

To be frank, I’m not sure there’s much you can do unless he is posting illegal material (e.g., child pornography). Unfortunately, the situation you describe is one of the dangers of posting personal information online on social websites such as Myspace and Facebook.

To the extent that the website is misappropriating copyrighted material, then the copyright owner can submit a DMCA takedown notice to have the infringing material removed. For example, your daughter may own the copyright to photographs that were copied onto the website.

For more information on the DMCA, consult the link below.
http://www.chillingeffects.org/dmca512/faq.cgi

I also strongly suggest you consult an attorney who has expertise in Internet law and especially privacy issues with regards to Internet law. I’m not sure they can help, but it’s worth a try. This is still a very new area of law, so these types of issues have no easy answers.

Also, there may be privacy services available that remove private information from websites, search engines, and the like.

Domain name with invalid contact information?

I am trying to do a whois search on a .net domain, but the registrant has entered invalid information. Who would I report it too,

Try looking at ICANN or the registrar listed.
ICANN is the master database for domain names, and the registrar is who they bought the domain name through.

If a known spammer and cybersquatter has taken my domain name, is there any way I can get it back?

If you do a whois search for www.floatforhealth.com, you’ll see that Jason Falk is the current registrant. However, if you go to www.floatforhealth.com, you’ll see that it’s not being used. This was my business website address until Mr. Falk took it over and sat on it. He hasn’t responded to my calls or e-mail to negotiate selling it back to me. He’s done this with other websites as well, though at the moment, I don’t have those site names. Mr. Falk is also listed on http://www.us.sorbs.net with several instances of spamming.

After failing to contact him, I registered www.floatforhealth.net. We were losing so much money from not having a website up. We’ve transferred the files over to the new website, but I wonder if there’s any recourse for getting my domain name back.

Here’s what WIPO, the World Intellectual Property Organization, has to say:

Domain name disputes arise largely from the practice of cybersquatting, which involves the pre-emptive registration of trademarks by third parties as domain names. Cybersquatters exploit the first-come, first-served nature of the domain name registration system to register names of trademarks, famous people or businesses with which they have no connection. Since registration of domain names is relatively simple and inexpensive – less than US$100 in most cases – cybersquatters often register hundreds of such names as domain names.

The UDRP (Uniform Domain Name Dispute Resolution Policy)permits complainants to file a case with a resolution service provider, specifying:

the domain name in question,

the respondent or holder of the domain name,

the registrar with whom the domain name was registered,

the grounds for the complaint.

Such grounds include, as their central criteria, the way in which the domain name is identical or similar to a trademark to which the complainant has rights; why the respondent should be considered as having no rights or legitimate interests in respect of the domain name that is the subject of the complaint; and why the domain name should be considered as having been registered and used in bad faith.

I strongly recommend contacting an IP (intellectual property) attorney about these issues. If you would like a referral, please contact me.

Prior to investing your time, money & effort into a business name, it is strongly advised that comprehensive research be conducted to ensure that the name you’re interested in is truly available.

This entails searching the pending & registered Federal and State trademark files as well as the US National Common-Law files. Then, if clear, you can decide if you would like to file for a Federal or a State trademark.

Research is needed to make sure your trade name is legally available, before opening, before expansion, before incorporation or before designing your logo. Similarities in sound, appearance and meaning affect you too!

There are 16+ million trade names in use in the United States. Similar names matter, if close in sound, appearance or meaning. Similar names in related classes, distribution channels and customer matter too. You are affected by Common Law use (14 million), State Trademarks (500,000) and Federal Trademarks (2 million).

How can NAME.COM LLC be stopped from stealing unique domain names?

I recently used name.com to search for the registration status for a unique domain name that I wanted to register. Two days later name.com is now the registrant of that domain name. I have searched for other instances of this and it seems that name.com has made this a profitable regular practice.

You have no right to blame them, my friend. Because in the internet world, domain names are sold like hot cakes.

Once you like a name which is available by your luck, you have to register it there and then.

Good luck next time.

Vera.

How can I perform a whois search by registrant name?

Doing some competitive research, but my key competitor put their domains on several IPs. I did a reverse IP lookup, but there are a bunch of other domains along with them (using shared hosting, I suppose).
I do know that they use 3 variations of the same registrant name. Is there any tool or method by which to query whois databases for that information?

Even thought it appears that the registrant data goes out to all the whois servers, it seems that none of the Whois offerings give you the option of searching against that field. Maybe some of the original command-line tools let you do this?

Here is one service that lets you search for registrant ID within the *.us domains: http://www.whois.us/.
