How do you point your registered domain name to your hom eip?

If i buy a domain name from say godaddy and m running my own web server on my PC and have a static ip which i do, then how do i register my ip with the domain name, i know that all domain names are stored in various DNS servers i think at your ISP. So how do i do this, so i would be adding my IP to the DNS server, can you do this when buying your domain name, again at say godaddy?

When you get a domain at GoDaddy they will provide a minimum webspace at least for a webpage.

Then if you go into the DNS file it creates for your domain (called a Zone File) it will be quite clear. Lets say you got example.com

There will be example.com and an IP
www.example.com and an IP
mailservers to handle the mail for example.com with their IPs
possible some others such as ftp.example.com and gallery.example.com

You can just go ahead and change any of those you want to your IP number and save it. Anywhere from 1 day to a week it will wash all thru the caches on the net to make it official for everyone

But remember, DNS is just Domain NAME server. It translates the name, to an address. Lets say that your IP is 127.0.0.1 and you tell GoDaddy to send all www.example.com and emails for @example.com to that IP. You still will have to have something set to receive and handle www and email requests. Just pointing it at your home computer wont do much without server software.

Is it legal to buy a domain name when it becomes available and to then forward that domain?

I am not sure how this works legally. If someone were to buy a domain after it had expired and the renew period had ended and the original owner had not renewed could a competing business then legally forward traffic to their own site after buying the domain? In this case the domain is the name of the other business.

In short, you cannot use another’s trademark or a confusingly similar variant in order to forward traffic to your site.

Domain disputes are generally handled under the Uniform Domain Name Dispute Resolution Policy (UDRP). While the UDRP is relatively new, the number of decisions is pretty substantial and the case law is pretty well developed for most common disputes.

Decided cases can be searched at the link below.

http://www.udrpinfo.com/dcsn.php

As an example, look at the case below. Someone registered 11 domain names found confusingly similar to JP Morgan’s trademarks. All 11 domain names were transferred from the registrant to JP Morgan.

What makes a domain name a successful business?

There are plenty of damin names out there with potential. Potential means nothing without a business plan. If you have a domain name that you feel is worth money, you are wrong. A domain name by itself is worthless unless there is someone out there who is willing to invest in it.

Making money from domain names is not limited anymore to the buying and selling of domain names.

True, the true value of a domain name is hard to predict. Its value is dictated by the amount of money a person/organization is willing to pay for it. It’s a hit and miss business – you may find some names you think are worth high only to find no takers.

But the business of domain name has evolved. Before, your only option is to buy a domain name, and wait for someone interested to buy it. Now you can earn money from your domain names without selling them. All you have to do it to put advertising on it. Google has a domain park program where you can put Adsense ads on your domain. And wait for type in traffic (those who type in the URL and make misspellings so instead of landing on the site they want to go they go elsewhere.)

Business 2.0 had an interesting article on the new business model of domain names http://money.cnn.com/2005/11/30/technology/domains_biz20_1205/index.htm

How to register a domain name without revealing personal information?

For an example, a person wants to create a website about politics. And the discussions on the site might be somewhat radical, which can cause trouble to the founder if their information is revealed.
How can that person own a domain name without revealing personal information?

PS: I’ve heard of a feature called "private registration." Is it a safe and risk-free way?

Most registrars will give you the option of putting their information rather than yours as the official contact information for the domain. This is perfectly safe.

How can I transfer a domain name from one registrar to another?

I registered a domain name a few months ago with a little known company. The problem is the company’s service is a piece of crap – half the time their name servers are down. So I want to transfer that domain name to godaddy. So how do I go about it? Do I need to notify the old registrar and get their permission or can I just pay godaddy for the transfer and have it take place?

Don’t trust any cheap service, many of them don’t allow you to have full control on your domain name. If you’re going to buy domain names, refer to:

http://www.goldpuma.com/

GoldPuma is the lowest cost service which is full-featured and really works for you ($9.99 /year). They offer free extras with every domain name:

Quick Blogcast
Hosting with Web site builder
Personalized Email Account
Starter Web Page For Sale/ Parked Page
Domain Parking
Domain Forwarding
Domain Masking
100-Pack Email Forwarding
Total DNS Control
Change of Registration
Status Alerts
Domain Locking

As you may know a domain name is just a name, not a real website. If you are going to create your website: 1- Buy a domain name. A domain name is a name you want to call your website (ex: www.yahoo.com). To get a domain name, you have to pay an annual fee to a registrar for the right to use that name. 2- Buy a web hosting service to provide your online space and enable you to get your website online at your purchased domain name.

If you want to start your website I recommend purchase your domain and hosting together. In this way it is possible to get your domain for free. Some hosting services offer this gift today.

As an experienced webmaster I recommend BlueHost service which I’m sure it would work for you and fulfill all your requirements. They have a really great offer for hosting & I have used them for over 3 yrs now, and have never had a single problem with them.

They are a Multi-awarded Web Hosting which offer a Full-featured service only $6.95. You can see their Plan Details accompanied with reliable reviews regarding their service at:

******IMPORTANT*******
* This service was awarded “The Best Web Host OF The Year”.
* If you sign up for this service you will have $75 credits to advertise your website with the google & yahoo search engines for free!
* You Can Register A Free Domain or Use Your Existing Domains. They Support All Domain Names.

what is an illegal domain name regarding trademark?

I have registered domain names for an upcoming release of a product. The release has been known for quite some time and surprisingly, the domains were available. I would like to know if there are certain domains that are illegal, if I’m planning to offer a service related to the products trademarked name.
what if i’m not using something like ipod.com but something like ipodservicecenter, ipod magazine, or ipoddrives.com(s)
now, if they’ve trade marked ipod musical cinema – can i get ipodmusicalcinema.com ?

The domains you are talking about still contain Apple’s trademark, iPod, so it’d be my guess that you’d have a hard time holding on to those domains. Large corporations take their intellectual property quite seriously. I suggest contacting a trademark attorney before moving ahead with your plans.

Hope that helps! I wish you much success & happiness in all your ventures!

What’s the difference between domain name system and domain name server?

What’s the difference between domain name system and domain name server?

Hello,

The Domain Name System (DNS) is a hierarchical naming system for computers, services, or any resource participating in the Internet. It associates various information with domain names assigned to such participants. Most importantly, it translates domain names meaningful to humans into the numerical (binary) identifiers associated with networking equipment for the purpose of locating and addressing these devices world-wide. An often used analogy to explain the Domain Name System is that it serves as the "phone book" for the Internet by translating human-friendly computer hostnames into IP addresses. For example, www.example.com translates to 208.77.188.166.

A domain name server (or name server) is a computer that houses DNS zones of domain names. This includes A (host) records, CNAME (aliases) records, and MX (mail exchange) records for domain names. Name servers are essentially a piece of the Domain Name System.

I hope this helps!
