Hi I am beginner in web designing field.& I registered a domain name paying some amount I also got confirmation mail stating that my domain name have been registered & I can check it after 48 hours.Now my question is domain name & URL is same thing?If no then how I will know my domain name is active or not?& when I will publish my site do i need to change my URL? as domain name wch i registered is someones URL which I came to know later after registering..Im very confused now…pls help…just tell me what is the procedure once you register your domain name.
Heya!
Uniform Resource Locator (URL) and Domain Name System (DNS) can be used interchangeably. Your URL and Domain name point to a series of files on the internet, or on your web server.
The confusion for first timers is drawing the line between the Domain Name and the Server. You have your domain registered within the DNS or Domain Name System, BUT you also have to have a Web Server to hold your web content – so insure that you not only have a registered domain name, but you also have a Web Server to hold your web files. Here is a diagram of how it looks…
www.yoursite.com —-> Web Server <—— User/Site Visitor
(sucks to have no drawing tools…LOL!!)
Your URL will point to s series web files (website) and users will access these files on the web server by typing in your URL.
Cheers!

they want to charge $70 to basically find out if it’s for sale, and then negotiate a rate, from the way I understand it. But, when I just type in the site, in my internet address bar, it comes up with a Bing search. How do I go about getting that particular domain without paying godaddy.com $70? I assume there are other places out there that I’m overlooking. And I apologize if I sound really remedial, I’m a beginner.
Someone else must have it registered. Just because it is registered, does not mean there is a web site at that name yet (or ever)…

I am looking at buying a .com domain. I have never done this before. People recommended 1and1.com to me, but feel free to tell me if there is someplace better! I am concerned that if I register a domain with one company, and then I want to move to another company, that the original company won’t let me. If I get my domain from 1and1.com and then decide to switch to a different company in, say, a year, do I have to get a new domain? Does my domain stay with the company I register with? I am completely new to all of this. I get the difference between the domain [just the name] and hosting [the actual website]–do they both have to be the same company? I just don’t want my ignorance to cost me down the road. Any advice for beginners would be appreciated!
You should be able to change your domain to any company after your contract is up, if you have one. Some places will make you stay on for a year, like a mobile phone contract. But after that it is your domain and you can take it where you want.
Some other good domain sellers are godaddy.com and Netfirms.com. Usually you want to keep your site hosting and domain with the same company – it makes things a lot easier.

and the web host when the company ive done the website for are paying. I’m a real beginner at this.
Well, it depends on how much you want to spend.
1. The cheapest option I know is:
http://www.hosttell.com/one/
$3.75/month but they don’t offer that much disk space and options.
2. Godaddy has a couple of nice plans:
http://www.hosttell.com/godaddy/
3. For $5.78/month I recommend Dreamhost http://www.dreamhost.com/hosting.html
Their standard price is $119.40/year ($9.95/month if you pay yearly) but they currently have a promotion. You can use the promo code PLUS at sign up page and get the $50 discount + 2 Free domain names. This way you get them for $69.40/year ($5.78/month). You can use their huge Disk Space and host unlimited number of sites on a single plan.
Disk space: 500 GB
Bandwidth: 5000 GB
2 Free domain names
Price: $5.78/month ($69.40/year)
4. If you’re willing to pay $20+/monthly for hosting I recommend:

most user friendly s/w as i’m a beginner…..my site will cover different topics on different pages….will i be able to post the site for free???
In my opinion, 000WEBH0ST.com offers a very good hosting plan for free. They offer enough space to build a decent sized site (250 MB), as well as Cpanel.
Cpanel is a piece of software that "lives" on the server, not on your computer. It is easy to learn how to create blogs and message boards, and there is support that you can find online, as well as templates (Designs) that you can plug in with a few clicks and be ready to go.
Unless you get serious, do not invest in more expensive software packages like Dreamweaver. It is a great program, but not worth it until you know the basics.
To see the dummy trial website that I built for free using Wordpress and a free template, check out http://basichosting.net78.net
I added a 100 MB file so that you could test their download speeds. I have seen it fluctuate between 200 and 465 kb/sec. At the upper end, that is similar to the speeds that I get with my paid servers.

I have just purchased my own domain name from a domain name register. I need to be able to connect to my mysql database using a php script from my domain. Does anyone know i would go about setting that up. I am a beginner to this. Btw, I also have an apache server installed on my computer that runs on localhost.
Your ISP may have set it up for you already. Mine is like this
These are the names
$db_host = "rumpus";
$username = "sartorial";
$password = "557vilneus";
$DB_name = "sartorial_pn";
// connect to the database
if(!mysql_connect($db_host, $username, $password))
{
echo "<h1>Connection error ";
die(mysql_error());
}
mysql_select_db($DB_name);
// Then do the queries that you want

Domain Name Server unavailable, cannot be found. Have had to set this before, don’t remember how. I know to start at Command Prompt. Can anyone instruct a beginner?
It is due to improper setting of your web browser.
1. Open a web page, click on Tools – Internet Option.
2. Click on Security, Set everything in Security to Default Level.
3. Next Click on Connections – LAN Settings. Click on Automatically Detect Settings Only.
Close the web page and reopen it. Your IE will work as normal.
Hope this helps, Thanks.

Is there any better choices that are relatively inexpensive? why are the better? would they be compatible with beginner? thank you for your help!!
InMotion provides free domain name forever according to them. "Forever" means as long as you host with them. They do have a fairly fast server and seems to be quick when using FTP to upload files.

Hello!
I’d be grateful for advice…
I purchased a domain name with bravenet.com
I also have free hosting with bravenet.
I would now like to build a personal website.
However, I do not like bravenet’s templates or website builder.
Could someone tell me:
* What is free hosting and what does this provide? (there are ads with bravenet)
* Am I tied into being hosted by bravenet because I purchased my domain name via them?
* Will I have to re-purchase the domain name via bravenet on renewal?
* Can I move away from bravenet- and what can I move and how do I do it?
* What elements can I move and why should I consider this?
* Is it better to pay for hosting?
* Any suggestions as to good, reasonably priced hosting companies?
* Can anyone suggest a good way of building a website (either with an online website builder or with easy-to-learn web design functions as I am a web design total beginner)?
Thank you.
Scotty

I have registered a domain name just now. What can be the best strategy to earn money from it? I am sort of a beginner here…please help me.
Sell it.
Park it.
Develop it.
Sell it through sedo, afternic, greatdomains, etc or through a domain name forum like NamePros, DNForum or even on EBay. If it’s a good name that others would want then you could make a significant profit.
Park it with sedo, revenuedirect, goldkey, etc. and earn some chump change. Not the best strategy but maybe worth considering while you attempt to find a buyer for the name or work on the development of a site.
Develop it into a site that draws visitors and sell something. That something could be advertising on the site itself or products/services either through an affiliate or directly. This would be the best strategy to earn if done correctly.
Find a partner that isn’t a beginner to help in development of a site that will generate a decent income. For a beginner this is probably the best strategy.
