Data is transmitted based on IP addresses, which are a series of numbers. The Domain Name System (DNS) was developed to simplify the management of IP addresses. The DNS maps IP numbers to recognizable sets of letters, words or numbers. The DNS does this by establishing domains and a structured hierarchical addressing scheme.
