How do I find out who owns a domain name?

I want to buy a certain domain name to put up a website. The domain name isn’t used, but it unavailable. How do i find out who owns it?

To find the owner of any domain, the first step is to go to a whois site.

1) http://www.whois.net
2) Input the domain in the ‘WHOIS Lookup’ section
3) You will generally see the owner of the domain under ‘Registrant’,'Administrative Contact’, or ‘Technical Contact’.

*Sometimes domain owners have hidden their names by purchasing extra privacy options. In a case like this, they generally will have a made up name and company, BUT you will see a masked email address. This masked email address will not be the owners actual email address, but will forward to the owner.

If you need additional help or questions please feel free to contact me as I own a domain company and work with similar matters often.

If it’s a UK web-site, use the ‘whois’ check on the Nominet site http://www.nominet.org.uk/ although if it’s owned by a private individual, you may not be able to find out. Even if you do, I still find that people have an unrealistically high expectation of what their ‘precious’ domain name is worth!

    Hello,

(ANS) You can check those details through NOMINET who are the UK controlling authority for ALL UK based domain names.

    SEE:- http://www.nominet.org.uk/

**You can then run a search on the domain name in question from nominet’s website.

ICANN is the US based organization for global domain names if outside the UK.

    Hello,

there are many site display information of ownership, e.g.

    http://www.internic.com
    http://www.whois.sc
    http://www.netlynx.in/domain.php?action=whois

Please not that in most it displays following:
    Registrant
    Admin
    Billing
    Technical

Admin details are the details of owner as per norms.

    Hello,

A domain name for a company that we handled their website for, lost their domain name due to a bad email address on the whois. A company snatched it up and we have no way of knowing who they are. They are protected by privacy options on Network Solutions and I have no way of knowing who they are.

Please let me know if there is a way to get their info. I sent an email to their masked email address but can’t get a reply.

    Any help is appreiciated.
