How do I start my own online magazine?

I already know what I want it to be about and have finances to spare. I mean, literally, what steps do I take? Is there software? Do I buy a domain name? Etc.

You have to buy a name (keep it short) through a place like Godaddy.com (about $9 a year) and site space.

If you don’t anticipate using a lot of space you might want to check out $1 hosting which costs $60 for the first year and $12 each additoinal year, but you only get 20 MB of space which will hold about 14 MB of pages or data.

One the up side it has unlimited bandwidth.

You can’t use it for adult content. You have to get to a special adult site host for that and that is expensive.

A lot depends on what your content is. If it’s mostly text with maybe a picture or 2 you can use Word and save has an HTML page.

You do need to understand raw coding to take a lot of this apprach otherwise you will need to spend $$$ and get a program like Dreamweaver or Front Page

If you need a secure site and on-line store, it would be best to get with a bigger host, but that will cost you $40+ a year, every year and you are now LIMITED in your bandwidth to about 30/50GB per month.

The magazine I work with gets about 10,000-20,000 page views a month and we have lots of pictures so our bandwidth approaches 25 GB per month and we are almost at our limit.

Also we are using up space like crazy. We are now taking up almost have of our 500 MB, but we have thousands of pages and tons of pictures.

Don’t expect to get advertisers. We just finally qualified for per click and we don’t make all that much. It basically covers site costs.
