Where are some places I can get a free domain name or redirection service?
I’m starting up a blog for my friend, who wants to blog about her journey with cancer and share it with other sufferers, but I haven’t been able to find any places that actually provide free domain names or redirections. Any help would be greatly appreciated

You won’t find any free domain names.. You need to pay a fee to register a domain name.

You can try many freedomain name providers that basically give you a subdomain, you will eventually have to pay for high level domains.
However you can use any free domain providers (Note: your domain will be something like http://your_website_name.domain_name_provider.com
, but u can shorter that URL to something decent like
http://yourwebsite.co.nr etc…
Just look for free domain providers and URL shortening providers.
One good url shortening service is offered by
http://www.freedomain.co.nr
Also note that many of these providers (whether be domain or url shortening) may ask you to put a banner or backlink or some add on your website in return.
However if its just a blog that you want to set up, this is a very good place to begin with :

when large companies like google and yahoo provide free sub domains for blogs why do you want to take free domain names and redirects ?
just goto blogspot.com and create one for him as kickcancer and it will create a blog as kickcancer.blogspot.com
so you have achieved what you wanted without complicating things.
