problem connecting to the internet…?

Firstly I do not know very much about computers… hence asking you great people for some advice!
I have a regular pc and a laptop and run them both with a wireless hub for internet connection. The pc is working fine, but I cannot connect with the laptop. I have tried all the general re-starts and disabling the firewall and re-setting it again and it still would not connect.

The standard message (as below) appeared:

Internet Explorer cannot display the webpage
Most likely causes:
You are not connected to the Internet.
The website is encountering problems.
There might be a typing error in the address.
What you can try:
Diagnose Connection Problems
More information
This problem can be caused by a variety of issues, including:
Internet connectivity has been lost.
The website is temporarily unavailable.
The Domain Name Server (DNS) is not reachable.
The Domain Name Server (DNS) does not have a listing for the website’s domain.
If this is an HTTPS (secure) address, click Tools, click Internet Options, click Advanced, and check to be sure the SSL and TLS protocols are enabled under the security section.

I don’t know what the DNS really means / does – but think it is that I am using bt yahoo as a platform to access the web (?) If this is the case I do not know how to check these settings etc.

Have also checked the internet properties and under the "advanced" tab have applied a "reset" which if I understood it correctly is for use when "your browser is in an unstable condition" and restores default settings. May have caused more by doing this as a little knowledge is dangerous!

Advice please as to what I should attempt next!
Thanks in advance

I too get this problem each day when i switch on the Computer & like you know next to nothing about Computers. However i discovered that if i went to my ISPs "Assist&Go" which diagnoses problems it tells me to refresh my IP address which it does for me, and this sorts the problem. My modem shows continuously that i`m connected OK, so unless this rights itself in the very near future, i will be on the phone to India.
Just thought it may be worth a try
P.S. I have had this trouble since downloading SP3 last week.

Ok, where to start … there could be a number of reasons this is not working. If you’re at home and have a wireless router it could be you need to setup your laptop to be allowed. (WEP settings, make sure wireless is enabled on the router etc)
Check the wireless settings on the laptop also to see if you’re actually connected and if you see your own network or others around you.

It could also be settings on your laptop. Check to see if you’re getting allocated an IP address. Click Start -> Run -> type cmd hit enter … command prompt will open up. In there type ipconfig and see if anything is being assigned.

    Good luck!
