I’m Cathy Rankin and for Monday May 21st we’re bringing you the latest news from around the markets as well as the top movers to look out for today…
(HEADLINE NEWS)
In Headline News Today…
A day after taking a breather, the bulls returned Friday fully rested and ready to silence the bears yet again with another upward surge into the record books. The Dow closed at another new high, its 24th record this year, while the S&P 500 finished at its best level in 6 1/2 years and within five points of its all-time closing high. All 10 economic sectors finished positive.
The bulls’ was established early in the session when a preliminary read on consumer sentiment unexpectedly rose for the first time in four months. More M&A news, though, and anticipation of another merger-filled Monday, were the driving factors behind the broad-based move that forced sellers to the sidelines going into the weekend.
Reports that General Electric (GE 36.91 +0.38) is nearing a deal to sell its plastics division for roughly $11 bln was the first, noteworthy item to hit the wires
The second item, the bigger M&A driver was word from Microsoft that it will acquire aQuantive for $6 bln or $66.50 per share in cash. That marked a huge premium to AQNT’s closing price on Thursday and it underscored the liquidity factor that continues to provide a floor of support in this market
Some upbeat analyst commentary provided an added boost of optimism. Intel a suggested holding in the Briefing.com Active Portfolio, and Verizon Communications were upgraded. Fellow Dow component IBM hit a new multi-year high after UBS raised its price target on the stock to $124.
The performance of those three components, along with GE’s 1.0% gain and Exxon Mobil’s surge to an all-time high, even as oil prices closed flat, accounted for more than half of the Dow’s 79-point gain.
And now for our Small Cap News… brought to you by Hybrid Technologies, Inc. (HYBT.OB)

This week MCR takes on a heavy-hitter: the cult mini-classic “Bad Taste,” the progenitor of the slap-stick gore genre and debut effort for a current A-list Hollywood director.
Bad Taste is infantile, offensive, without redeeming social or cultural value… and oh so very funny.
***1/2 / ****
____________
Most people doubtless think the Mill Creek collection is made up solely of forgotten movies by no-name personalities. But proven masterpieces and cult favorites can be found everywhere, even in the public domain.
Take this early work by Peter Jackson, one of the finest producer-directors plying the craft today. [Show something unusually stupid.] Before District 9, Lord of the Rings and King Kong, Jackson helmed Bad Taste, a zero-budget sci-fi-horror parody in which malevolent space aliens, in need of carrion for an intergalactic fast food chain, conquer a small New Zealand town and harvest its inhabitants. The powers that be, fearing panic if they mobilize the military, instead summon an, ahem, elite fighting force known as The Boys in the hopes of taking care of things quietly. As our heroes reconnoiter the town they get separated.
Disaster strikes when one of them is hurt rather badly while battling with the alien zombies. Ow. Meanwhile the invaders hole up in a country home and abduct a nerdy collector to turn into kiwiburgers. An interminable firefight with the stamina of a Neil Peart drum solo ensues, and many lives innocent and guilty alike are lost before the worlds can be set right again.
Bad Taste is, in a word, gross. In three words, its really, really gross. Someve said that because Bad Taste is essentially a slapstick comedy, the gore isnt quite as disgusting as it could be. To my mind Bad Tastes lightheartedness actually makes it more disgusting. In a really disturbing horror movie, the emotional impact of a violent scene can dilute the visceral revulsion at the blood and guts hell, even a bad movie that takes itself too seriously isnt going to literally turn your stomach the way Bad Taste does.
But its hard to call this a criticism since nausea is clearly the reaction the movies after. That and laughs. Bad Taste is awful funny, and its humor can be urbane just as much as it can be broad and physical. [ministry of works joke] Jackson and company made Bad Taste over several years on a budget rumored to be around 30 grand. Although no one would mistake the result for Lord of the Rings (its actually much better), theres no doubt the moviemakers put their meager funds to work. The movies often accused of being slipshod or improvised, but its dialog is in fact tight and its shots are crisp and well laid out. Very little, other than sheep guts, is wasted. Jackson, in other words, made up for the projects budget limitations by paying attention to the things that are free: detailed and patient planning. You can see why he eventually caught the attention of the big studios.
There seems to have been something in the air about the time Bad Taste was made: The world, for better or worse, was plainly ready for the genre of gore slapstick. In what is as far as I know a coincidence, a very similar and, if its possible, even more stomach-churning movie called Street Trash came out the same year, and I had trouble watching Bad Taste without thinking of the admittedly somewhat later first-person shooter Doom, which shares not only the earlier movies fascination with humorously copious fusillades of automatic weapons fire, but also most of Bad Tastes specific armament.
A mid-20s Peter Jackson also stars as Derek, a squinty Dr. Who nerd who nevertheless provides command and control for The Boys until his unfortunate accident. As a directorial cameo its both modest and demanding. Jackson seems to have put himself at some genuine personal risk in a knee-wobbling scene on a high cliff, for instance, but his sacrifices dont tempt him to aggrandize his character. Dereks uniquely privileged vantage point seems like a metaphor for Jacksons role as a director, so then his manner could be thought of as an expression of how Jackson sees the mood of the movie: unpresuming, but at the same time competent and ambitious. This unique combination of talent and self-effacement is also in evidence in later titles in Jacksons horror satire phase, Meet the Feebles and Brain Dead. To my mind his mainstream Hollywood output is a lot less inspired; before he retires, Id love to see Jackson use the resources made available by his newfound success to make a high-budget feature thats more in keeping with his roots.

The state-run organization that oversees Chinas Internet domain registration has recently announced some new rules—rules that many fear will further restrict online activities.
Under the regulations put in place by the China Internet Network Information Center, only those with a business license can register for a dot-CN domain—which is used to identify China-based websites. This means private citizens are effectively barred from owning a personal website domain.
Chinas Ministry of Industry and Information has also announced five measures to manage domain names. These include tightening the registration procedure for those wanting a dot-CN domain, and restricting access to foreign websites not registered with the Ministry.
According state-run media Xinhua, the measures are meant to tackle online pornography.
But a professor from the Communication University of China echoed the fears of many Chinese. He told state-run Global Times that the latest measures will increase obstacles for those who want to express themselves online, and ultimately restrict the development of the Internet.
NTDTV’s official YouTube Channel got taken down for some weird reason, so I thought it would be a good time to upload some of their noteworthy videos again and it’s also to remind you guys that you can actually still find ALL their programming on their website: http://english.ntdtv.com – So just cause Google is probably bowing to China again doesn’t mean they are gone – go visit their website, they don’t only have news on human rights in China, but have 24 hour programming with live streaming.

Heroin (Diacetylmorphine) Information: Heroin is the common name of a substance known by the chemical name, diacetylmorphine. Heroin is synthesized from morphine, and morphine is synthesized from opium produced by the plant known by the botanical name Papaver Somniferum (common name opium poppy). Rather than being a different drug, heroin is a method of preparing morphine so that it is absorbed more efficiently by the human body, when injected. If heroin is injected into a human, more morphine will reach the brain than it would if the same amount of morphine were injected. Injecting about 5mg of heroin will produce the same results as injecting 10mg of morphine. Heroin can also be snorted, smoked, or taken orally. However, these other routes of administration are not recommended. They are not as efficient and most of the drug is wasted. If you are not going to inject heroin, an equal amount of morphine will produce similar results. When it is not injected, the heroin is usually totally metabolized by the human body before it can affect the amount of morphine that reaches the brain. So the effects of heroin are nearly the same as an equivalent amount of morphine when snorted, smoked, or taken orally. The time it takes to feel the effects depends on the method of administration. Snorting heroin results in onset within 10-15 minutes. Smoking heroin results in an almost immediate (milder) effect which gets stronger if more is smoked in that particular session. Intravenous injection results in rush and euphoria within 7-8 seconds, intramuscular injection takes about 5-8 minutes. Orally, as when heroin or morphine are ingested in pill form, it can take 60-90 minutes to feel anything. The primary effects of morphine (the main active ingredient in heroin) are a cessation or reduction of pain and/or a euphoric and content feeling. Heroin and morphine use almost always causes constipation, thinking may be slower, and a user may feel nausea or vomit. Opioid itch, an itch caused by taking an opium based drug, may be present. Another physical effect of morphine is respiratory system depression. This makes it an excellent cough suppressant. It is also usually the cause of death in a heroin or morphine overdose. According to the 1996 National Household Survey on Drug Abuse, an estimated 2.4 million people in the USA used heroin at some time in their lives. Nearly 216,000 of them reported using it within the month preceding the survey. The survey report estimates that there were 141,000 new heroin users in 1995, and that there had been an increasing trend in new heroin use since 1992. A large proportion of the recent new users were smoking, snorting/sniffing heroin, and most were under age 26. The 1996 Drug Abuse Warning Network (DAWN), which collects data on drug-related hospital emergency department episodes from 21 metropolitan areas, estimates that 14 percent of all drug-related ED episodes involved heroin. Physical dependence develops with higher doses of the drug. With physical dependence, the body adapts to the presence of the drug and withdrawal symptoms occur if use is reduced abruptly. Symptoms of withdrawal include restlessness, muscle and bone pain, insomnia, diarrhea, vomiting, cold flashes with goose bumps, and leg movements. Major withdrawal symptoms peak between 24 and 48 hours after the last dose of heroin and subside after about a week. Heroin withdrawal is never fatal to otherwise healthy adults, but the psychological effects can be so bad that the user might kill themself, rather than going through withdrawl. To avoid physical addiction heroin should be used once every four days, maximum. If you take it on friday, wait till tuesday or later before doing it again. If you can limit your use to once every four days, physical addiction and tolerance problems are minimized. You will not require larger doses to produce the same results.
